RO ELEMENT DESIGN

Introduction

TORAY REVERSE OSMOSIS MEMBRANE ELEMENTS are functional membrane elements with excellent quality and high performance developed with the polymer engineering expertise Toray has gained over the years. Toray Reverse Osmosis Membrane Elements are high rejection and high flux RO elements that have been meeting the high level requirements of our customers in many applications: ultrapure water production for semiconductor and other industries; seawater desalination; wastewater treatment; the recovery of valuable process materials in the food processing industry, etc. The wide-ranging line of products was first marketed in 1978.
Toray membrane products are manufactured in three locations allowing for convenient global distribution. Toray’s manufacturing plants in Ehime Japan, TBMC in China, and TMUS in US are all certified for both ISO9001 and ISO14001. Also, TMUS plant has achieved the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) certified for their low-pressure brackish products.

Toray manufactures RO elements using second-generation automated rolling equipment developed by Toray Industries. The automatic winding of spiral wound elements provides a more durable, higher membrane surface area product versus traditional hand rolled elements. The RO elements manufactured are dimensionally compatible with all major membrane manufacturers providing easy upgrade and retrofit opportunities. The high quality (high rejection, high flow characteristics) of Toray's products make them ideally suited for use in applications such as municipal drinking water, seawater desalination and the production of ultra pure water for the semiconductor and power industries.

Toray RO Element Design

Toray manufactures two different membrane product lines: cross-linked polyamide composite membranes (TM and SU series) and asymmetrical cellulose acetate membranes (SC series).

TM Element series

The TM series of elements uses the close-coupled design (interior interconnector), which is the industry standard. This design allows for greater membrane surface area to be incorporated into the element, which leads to higher productivity and/or reduced operating pressures.

SC Element series

  • Spiral wound reverse osmosis elements which employ asymmetrical cellulose acetate membrane.
  • Stable performance and dependability are proven in a wide range of applications since first marketed in 1978.
  • Due to the non-charged membrane and unique element configuration, pretreatment can be carried out easily and fouling tendencies are reduced
  • The membranes can be used in a continuous chlorine sterilization process
